Tofelzon House
Bila and Avraham Tofalzon House was built in the early nineteen twenties in the Romantic Style (known in Israel as the Eclectic Style). The building was designed by Arch. Yitzhak Kipnis for commercial and residential use. Located on the northern part of Nahalat Binyamin street, the building is accompanied by a collection of impressive houses built in the same style, each with its own distinctive features. From its establishment Nahalat Binyamin Street was a central urban thoroughfare combining commerce and housing with a unique character and scale. The proportions of the building maintain the continuation of the physical, planning and design of the pedestrian zone. The commercial ground floor acts as a continuation of the pedestrian mall activity.
The three-story building is divided into three wings the first of which faces Nahalat Binyamin Street. The striking façade is accentuated by two curved apsis that accompany the second and third floors and are decorated by elaborate plasterwork and molding. At the back of the lot are two additional wings, built two stories high and separated by an inner courtyard.
Many of the original details were destroyed over the years and the building had fallern into disrepair.
The building was designated for the strictest conservation including restrictions regarding additions and modern interventions.
